Raphael Ntumy
Raphael Ntumy, MD, MPH, is the country director for ICAP-Lesotho and is responsible for providing overall direction of the lCAP program to attain its strategic objectives in Lesotho.
Before joining ICAP in January 2005, Dr. Ntumy worked with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BOTUSA Project in Botswana as a Medical Scientist and served as Section Chief of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) section where he provided technical assistance in the development and implementation of Botswana’s PMTCFT program. He also served as a public health physician for the Botswana Ministry of Health and later as the Program Manager for the Botswana PMTCT program where he lead in establishing Africa’s first nation wide PMTCT program. Early in his career, he worked in Ghana in the area of internal medicine and infectious diseases prevention and control.
Dr. Ntumy contributed to the development and implementation of the opt-out approach to HIV testing initiative and early infant HIV diagnosis using dried blood spot for DNA PCR testing in Botswana. He has served on HIV/AIDS Technical Working Groups and contributed in writing guidelines and protocols for HIV/AIDS programs. Dr. Ntumy’s current interest is in the area of providing a family-centered HIV/AIDS care and treatment in resource limited settings.
Dr. Ntumy obtained his medical degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Ghana. He has more than 15 years experience in the area of HIV/AIDS.
