Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV in
PMTCT and Care and Treatment Programs:
Comprehensive Peer Educator Training Curriculum and Implementation Manual
ICAP, along with Ministries of Health and other local partners, is implementing innovative Peer Educator programs in several sub-Saharan African countries. Peer Educators, themselves living with HIV and enrolled in care and treatment, support people living with HIV (PLHIV) and their families by providing education and practical adherence and psychosocial support, as well as community follow-up for clients who miss appointments. Peer Education programs support greater and more meaningful involvement of PLHIV in service delivery and help tackle the human resource demands of HIV care by supporting task-shifting to trained lay counselors. To share lessons learned, experiences and materials more widely, ICAP developed, and has recently updated per the new WHO guidelines, generic Peer Educator materials, which can be adapted by organizations and implementing partners wishing to start or scale-up Peer Education programs. ICAP's Peer Education curriculum (trainer and participant manuals) and an Implementation Manual to guide Peer Education program planning, implementation and monitoring is accessible free of charge.

Comprehensive Peer Educator Training Curriculum
Training content areas were selected to prepare Peer Educators for integration into the multidisciplinary HIV care team and provide added support in key areas of PMTCT and HIV care and treatment service delivery. The curriculum contains 15 basic and 4 advanced Modules. The Training Curriculum is highly participatory, easy to follow and contains step-by-step instructions for facilitators. The Participant Manual includes key information, as well as illustrations to engage participants and improve learning. The Participant Manual can also be used as a reference for Peer Educators after the training. Both Manuals can easily be adapted to specific country and program contexts.
