Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV in
PMTCT and Care and Treatment Programs:
Comprehensive Peer Educator Training Curriculum and Implementation Manual
Available soon: Updated materials based on the revised WHO guidelines.
To better support PLHIV and their families, to have greater involvement of people living with AIDS (GIPA) and to tackle the human resource demands of HIV care by task-shifting, ICAP, along with Ministries of Health and other local partners, developed innovative peer education programs in numerous countries. For each program, ICAP designed country-specific training curricula, implementation plans and technical support structures. To share lessons learned, experiences and materials more widely, ICAP developed generic Peer Educator materials which can be adapted by organizations and implementing partners wishing to start or scale-up Peer Education programs.
Comprehensive Peer Educator Training Curriculum
Training content areas were selected to prepare Peer Educators for integration into the multidisciplinary HIV care team and provide added support in key areas of PMTCT and HIV care and treatment service delivery. The curriculum contains 15 basic and 4 advanced Modules. The Training Curriculum is highly participatory, easy to follow and contains step-by-step instructions for facilitators. The Participant Manual includes key information, as well as illustrations to engage participants and improve learning. The Participant Manual can also be used as a reference for Peer Educators after the training. Both Manuals can easily be adapted to specific country and program contexts.
The Training Curriculum consists of three components:
