The second annual ICAP Collaborative Pediatric HIV Strategic Planning Workshop, held in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and the South-to-South Partnership for Comprehensive Pediatric HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment, took place April 13-17, 2008, in Cape Town, South Africa.
Workshop Goal:
- To critically consider and examine the continuity of care within and between prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV and pediatric HIV services over time and life stages.
Workshop Objectives:
- Review current technical and scientific PMTCT and pediatric HIV updates.
- Share experiences, lessons learned, success and failures across programs supporting the family.
- Review services and models to support the follow-up of HIV-exposed infants and infected infants, children and adolescents.
- Evaluate the care and treatment needs of the HIV-infected women throughout the reproductive lifecycle.
- Review/outline models of care to engage the family unit, including male partners and other decision-makers.
- Present solutions to systemic challenges (i.e. human resources, pharmacy) to continuity of care for the entire family.
- Problem-solve and design strategies to address country-specific PMTCT and pediatric HIV program challenges.
A variety of topics related to PMTCT and Pediatrics were covered in more than 30 small group sessions. Session topics were identified by country programs, and sessions themselves were developed and facilitated by the country staff using different adult learning methodologies. These small group sessions encouraged active participation and engagement of all attendees throughout the workshop.
